Why The Return Before the Ready Is the Book I Bring to Every Room

I did not write this book after I understood everything.
I wrote it while I was still inside the understanding. Still in the middle of figuring out what it cost me to leave, and what it would cost me to stay with myself afterward. I wrote it because the truest thing I could tell you about reclamation is that it does not wait until you have it all figured out.
What The Return Before the Ready Actually Is
The Return Before the Ready, Without Leaving Myself is a memoir in two parts. Part One follows the end of a marriage — not as a single dramatic event, but as the slow, honest admission that what I had been calling commitment had become something I could not survive inside. It documents the return to myself. The quiet middle. The shedding. The gradual, non-linear work of learning who I was without the story I had been performing.
Part Two begins approximately a year later. Love returned before I was fully ready. And what follows is not a love story — it is a story about the difference between loving someone and being prepared to build a life with them. About what it costs to stand in your own truth when standing in it requires loss.
Why I Bring This Book to Community Rooms
When I stand in front of a room of women — at a conference, a shelter, a faith-based women’s ministry, an awareness event — I do not lead with the framework. I lead with the story. Because the woman sitting in that room has already heard the framework. She has heard the language of empowerment and self-care and building boundaries. What she has not heard, often, is someone tell the truth about what it actually looked like from the inside.
The Return Before the Ready is that truth. And when I read from it in a keynote, or reference it in a workshop, or hand it to a woman who is still in the middle of her own version of what I lived — something happens in the room that no framework alone can produce. Recognition. The specific, profound relief of hearing your own experience named by someone who is not performing strength, but actually standing in it.
Day 48 of The Unweaving
The faculty applications are in motion. The consulting work is moving. The W.E.B. body of work is clearer and more organized than it has ever been. And on Day 48, what I know is this: the memoir is not a separate project from the framework. It is the ground the framework grew from. The W.E.B. Methodology™ would not exist without the experience documented in The Return Before the Ready. They belong together — and the community room is where that connection is most alive.
