The Advocate in the Room

The A in CARDS — from Teaching Beyond the Classroom

There is always a student in the building who nobody is fighting for. Not because nobody cares — but because nobody has decided that fighting for this particular child is their job. The Advocate decides it is their job.

What an Advocate Actually Does

An Advocate in the CARDS Method™ is not a cheerleader. Cheerleaders celebrate what is already going well. An Advocate shows up when things are not going well and says: I am going to help you change this. The Advocate understands that some students face structural barriers that a lesson plan was not designed to address. And instead of pointing students toward a system that was not built with them in mind, the Advocate goes into that system with them.

This means attending meetings the student does not know they are allowed to bring someone to. It means reading the IEP and asking the question nobody asked. It means calling the parent not because something went wrong but because the educator wants the parent to know something went right. It means staying in the building when everyone else has left because a student is waiting for a ride that is not coming.

Who Needs an Advocate

Every student. But particularly the ones who have learned not to ask. The ones who have been told — explicitly or implicitly — that their needs are inconvenient. The ones who have moved schools three times, whose records are incomplete, whose home life makes homework an act of courage. The Advocate sees that child not as a problem to be managed but as a person to be championed.

Systems That Empower. Strategies That Last.

Every system begins with a decision. Every strategy begins with a purpose.
