She Did Not Leave Herself Behind
A reflection from The Return Before the Ready, Without Leaving Myself
There is a version of returning that looks like collapse. You come back changed, quieter, carrying something you did not carry before. People around you see the change and call it growth. What they do not see is what you had to hold on to in order to get there.
The Choice Inside the Return
When I wrote The Return Before the Ready, I was trying to name something I had not seen named. The experience of going back — to yourself, to your purpose, to the life you were building before someone or something interrupted it — without losing what the interruption taught you. The return is not undoing the years. It is integration. It is arriving at a new place with everything you now know.
What Equity Has to Do With It
The second pillar of W.E.B. is Equity. Not institutional equity — though that matters. Personal equity. The practice of holding yourself to the same standard you hold everyone else to. Of deciding that your time, your peace, your dreams, and your energy deserve to be protected with the same conviction you bring to protecting everyone around you.
For many women — and I include myself in this — the return is the moment we discover how inequitable we have been with ourselves. How much we gave away without accounting for it. How much we extended to others what we denied ourselves.
This Is What the Return Looks Like in Practice
It looks like a morning with no urgency. A decision made from clarity instead of obligation. A relationship evaluated honestly instead of optimistically. A boundary held without apology. It looks, from the outside, like a woman who has changed. From the inside, it feels like a woman who has finally arrived.
